Students have been spending time outdoors, finding meaningful ways to connect with the environment around them, and learning how even small actions can contribute to sustainability. Some recent highlights follow.

A group of students at Nelson Elementary spent their lunch break picking up garbage after learning about how to protect the land. Grade 6/7 students at Maywood Community School grounded the start of their outdoor adventures with learning about local plants

Children at Edmonds Community School connected with nature during a visit to see the animals at Aldor Acres Family Farm. Through a partnership with Sprouting Chefs, students at Edmonds did cooking classes after school, including with food grown in the school garden. The after-school Garden Club at Edmonds has been harvesting carrots and more.

Student leaders of the Green Team at University Highlands Elementary visited classrooms to teach their peers about how to properly sort waste and recycling. As part of celebrating the Mid-Autumn Festival, primary students at Marlborough Elementary made mooncakes with the help of family members.

On a walking field trip, the Grade 2 Garden Club at Lakeview Elementary visited a local dahlia grower’s garden, exploring rows of colourful flowers. Each student brought a bloom back to school, sharing with their classmates their observations about the diversity in shape, size, and colour among the flowers.

Students at Confederation Park Elementary created art with natural materials, such as salt dough, pasta, and wood. Grade 3/4 students at Montecito Elementary used their imagination and fall leaves to bring their creations to life.
