Families of Grade 6 and 7 students will soon have a choice to enroll their child in an optional user-pay program for elementary band.
Approved by the 探花精选 at their January meeting, the program will begin next September. It will run after school and includes a fee for those who choose to participate.
At the Board Meeting, Chair Kristin Schnider thanked those who advocated for the District to find a way to retain the opportunity for children to have band at the elementary level, after it was cut for the current school year.听
鈥淭his is what happens when advocacy works. It was hundreds and hundreds of emails, phone calls, and conversations and the hard work of this community that gave the Board the leverage, the opportunity, and the evidence to say: we can鈥檛 cut this and walk away, we need to find a way to put it back 鈥 in a way that will protect it, that will make it sustainable, inclusive and accessible.鈥
The previous model of elementary band in 探花精选 Schools was outside of the provincial funding structure, relying on the District to cover the cost through operating funds. That model could not be sustained due to budget constraints.
At the end of the last school year, the Board stated a desire to find a solution that would both be financially sustainable and continue to provide the opportunity for elementary band. To that end, the Board asked District staff to investigate a possible user-pay elementary band program.
As part of the explorations, consultation was held through a working group of 探花精选 Schools music educators and the 探花精选 Teachers鈥 Association. Additionally, staff considered band program models used in neighbouring Metro Vancouver school districts, including the potential of using external providers.
At the January 27 public Board Meeting, Trustees approved an elementary band user-pay format for the 2026-27 school year that will provide program quality with instruction from elementary music teachers, and full District oversight balanced with affordability.
The program for Grade 6 and 7 students will run after school at six different sites, once per week with each session lasting an hour and a half. Over the school year from October to May, there will be 28 instructional sessions that will cost a total of $350 per student per year, with a minimum of 20 students in each location鈥檚 program.
The user-pay program pays for itself, with no profit in the fees in order to keep expenses low for families. Students will also need to rent or provide their own musical instrument. The District will consult with schools to find a way to address individual cases where financial hardship may preclude a student from participating.
This optional program is unique in that it is run through the District鈥檚 探花精选 Community and Continuing Education.
Registration for next fall is anticipated to take place from April to May of this year.
